10 Best Foo Fighters Love Songs, Ranked

Foo Fighters have a bizarre origin story. Founded by Nirvana’s drummer Dave Grohl in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s death, Foo Fighters would unknowingly go on to become one of the biggest rock bands to have ever existed. What began as a simple demo tape under the Foo Fighters’ name became an unmistakable brand that sold out tours across the globe.

Foo Fighters are known for an array of themes within their songwriting, but here I’ve collected 10 of their best love songs!

1. Everlong

Album: The Colour And The Shape
Released: 1997

“Everlong” is without a doubt the Foo Fighters’ most popular and groundbreaking song. Not only did it spark their stardom, but it also became a staple for which the band would be known today.

Dave Grohl described the feelings within the track to be about “being connected to someone so much that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly.” His vocals within the track are loving and passionate towards his ex-wife upon which this song is based; he was inspired to create the song when he received his divorce papers.

This may not be the cheeriest love song to start the list with, but it would be a crime to dismiss one of Foo Fighters’ best songs.

2. Walking After You

Album: The Colour And The Shape
Released: 1997

While many Foo Fighters songs are incredibly loving and positive, the band is not ignorant of the opposite side of love and romance. In “Walking After You”, Dave Grohl wanted to project his feelings towards his divorce from his wife at the time, opting for a solemn acoustic display of devotion.

I feel this is a song we can all relate to at some point in our lives, and it’s, unfortunately, something we must all experience to grow in some way.

3. Miracle

Album: In Your Honour
Released: 2005

To some, “Miracle” can be seen as the second part of “Best Of You”. In the former, Grohl has had time to reflect on the conflict between him and his partner, and “Miracle” is his way of expressing his feelings and lament towards the love lost with said partner.

The simple, loving sway of the track’s acoustic guitar complement Dave Grohl’s repetitive description of his subject as a miracle that he can’t let go of.

4. Times Like These

Album: One By One
Released: 2002

Here we have one of only a couple of fast-paced tracks within this list. “Times Like These” has a classic rock vibe to it, with energetic drums and the occasional cymbal crash which adds power to the overall feeling of the track.

The message of this track is love and compassion which Grohl explored during a rough time for the band. While the inspiration may not be from relationship-based love, “Times Like These” can be seen as an ode to self-love after hardship, or learning to appreciate those around you.

5. If Ever

Album: Let It Die
Released: 2008

“If Ever” is the song to send to that special someone. Everything about this track works so beautifully together that it could be considered one of the nicest love songs ever made. The lyrics are full of adoration towards a partner, with gentle reminders and reassurances that they’re perfect for each other.

Grohl’s soulful vocals and guitar work shine in this track, and the minimalist instrumental approach from the rest of the band emphasizes its raw and pure presentation.

6. Statues

Album: Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace
Released: 2007

Dace Grohlk takes on a curious vocal approach in this song. I keep hearing Chris Cornell at the beginning of this track, especially at the end of each line; perhaps the instrumentals also come together to create a Soundgarden-like jingle.

To put it simply, it’s a touching track exploring two people growing old together until their bodies become statues standing immortal in love. If that doesn’t make your heart melt, I don’t know what would.

7. Big Me

Album: Foo Fighters
Released: 1995

While The Colour And The Shape was the record that skyrocketed Foo Fighters’ career, 1995’s self-titled record also contains some hidden gems worthy of the limelight. “Big Me”, while a breakup song, has a summery, cheery atmosphere to it that can’t be ignored.

Grohl’s uplifting melodies pair well with the hopeful lyrics suggesting change and returning to a loved one is possible. It might not be as lovely as the other offerings on this list, but I think it’s one of their nicest songs.

8. Dear Lover

Album: The Colour And The Shape
Released: 1997

It still maintains that grunge air that Grohl especially is known for, but this goes down as one of their most beautiful songs. It’s all about the moment you fall in love with someone entirely and hopelessly until a part of you is within them and vice versa. It’s a touching ode to innocent adoration which can’t fail in putting a smile on your face.

With clean melodies and touching lyrics aplenty, “Dear Lover” is the perfect song to send to that special someone.

9. Virginia Moon

Album: In Your Honour
Released: 2005

If you’re looking for something different from Foo Fighters, I invite you to listen to “Virginia Moon”. Letting the heavy electric guitars take a breather, the band opts for a swaying samba-inspired instrumental throughout this doting track.

Background female vocals add an element of romanticism to the overall feel of the track which makes it an ideal song to dance to with your partner.

10. February Stars

Album: The Colour And The Shape
Released: 1997

Different from other tracks on this list, “February Stars” explores the importance of self-love, holding on to what we love, and making sure we make the most of every day. It’s an ode to the human condition and appreciating what we have around us.

I feel that the build-up of “February Stars” is its most appealing aspect. Grohl’s wispy, gentle vocals follow the gradual amplification of the guitar until the track eventually erupts into what can only be described as euphoria.
